Cartooning is a skill I'd been dabbling in for years, starting with my high school paper,The Redwood Bark (collaborating on "The Senior Quad", a single panel 'toon with now-filmmaker Jonathan Parker ("Bartleby", "The Californians") From there I graduated to being the staff cartoonist at the College of Marin Times newspaper, then dribbling off with a few single panel jobs sold to magazines like "The Chess Times", "Dragon Magazine", and "Just For Laughs, the Comedy Newspaper".
But then I got a call from my old buddy, Bob Lacey, who asked me to collaborate with him on the weekly editorial cartoon for the Half Moon Bay Review. After almost 4 years of providing a weekly cartoon for the paper (and more for their monthly magazine supplement,) our partnership abruptly came to an end with Bob's sudden and tragic passing at the end of April, 2004.
I continue to create images for the Review in the style we created over the past couple of years, "phodoodles", if you will -- editorial images created by manipulating photographic elements. What's more, I began using the phodoodle style on my blog The Daily Grill, both as individual cartoons and to illustrate some of the humorous entries which are updated daily.
In 2013, I won the 1st Place award for Editorial Cartoon in the Review's newspaper category from the California Newspaper Publishers Association. I was thereby forced to remove "award-seeking" from my cartoonist's bio.
